MetLife spent two years pursuing its foreign life insurance business before AIG finally relented in 2010 and agreed to sell the business for $15.5 billion. As Reuters put it at the time, the purchase gave one of America’s largest and oldest insurers beachheads in 47 nations, from Peru to Bangladesh.
